Krazy Kristol and the Powell distraction

by michael j.w. stickingson fox news yesterday — where else? — krazy bill kristol announced that bush i loyalist and former bush ii secretary of report colin powell is going to endorse obama at no less a venue than the democratic symposium in denver later this month.in response — or, quite, in refutation — powell himself announced that he was not even Steven going to the convention and that krazy kristol’s pronouncement was simply wrong: “i do not have once in a while to waste on bill kristol’s musings. i am not going to the conference. i have made this quit.”in general, i think we should all avoid wasting time on krazy kristol’s musings. he’s a cynical partisan hack — a puffery-spewing bullshitter — a walking, talking, living, breathing ulterior motive. unfortunately, nevertheless, he’s rather influential, a prominent neocon voice that speaks from famed media platforms, including the ny times, and cannot so easily be ignored.so what’s he up to here, accepted that it’s wise not to take anything he says at coat value?of class, powell could be the one misleading us here. it’s imaginable. it’s not feel favourably impressed by he’s ever been the most straight up guy in washington. maybe he intends on making a dumfound appearance at the convention, an semblance that would genuinely wow the media. maybe he intends on endorsing obama after all, a very damaging endorsement for mccain. hey, maybe he’ll be obama’s running mate. it’s possible.but not likely. powell is an egotistical opportunist, but he’s also incomparably alert (except, unquestionably, when he’s at the u.n. making fabricated cases for war) and extremely loyal (it’s not feel favourably impressed by he’s been harshly critical of bush ii and the conduct of the iraq war and occupation). and it just wouldn’t be like him to rest period ranks, both with his party and with his erstwhile superiors, and endorse obama at such a prominent event. afterwards, maybe, once the campaign is underway in earnest, but not at the convention.on this, i apt to think that andrew sullivan may be precise:it’s too ballsy a start for powell. i’m also inherently apprehensive of kristol’s motives. if powell were making allowance for such an endorsement, kristol would do all he can to derail it. prematurely leaking it, creating a fire-storm and forcing powell to deny is the same character to pre-empt such a move. it’s vital for the neocons to prevent obama gaining purchase with momentous foreign policy machers.i also agree with andrew that a powell endorsement of obama would make sense: “powell understands how deep a hole the us is in internationally, and how one obama truthfully has a chance to get the country back on its feet. it’s the impulse of a patriot. and perchance the smears deliver made him bugs.”maybe, but powell has already had ample opportunity to express whatever anger and frustration he is feeling. and we haven’t heard much from him. i lack of faith that “the smears” have finally pushed him over the nervous. also, i simply don’t mull over he’s such a determined patriot. his primary impulse is military-style loyalty, not patriotism. why else would he participate in done the bushies’ bidding for so long? he may have reasoned that he was doing right-wing by his country all along, but he must have known, at least at some level, that what was right throughout the bushies was seldom right conducive to the country. either that or he was delusional all along.regardless, i would welcome a powell endorsement of obama — mainly because he was with the bushies for so long and because he remains, undeservedly, an immensely credible figure in american politics — i just don’t see it happening. or, at least, certainly not at the convention.which leaves us wi

The man wrongly accused and later cleared of the murder of Rachel Nickell in 1992 has told the BBC that he has been awarded ?706,000 in compensation.

Colin Stagg, 44, confirmed the payout to the BBC’s Crimewatch programme.

Ms Nickell, 23, was stabbed 49 times in a frenzied daylight attack on Wimbledon Common in front of her child.

Mr Stagg was cleared of any involvement in the killing in 1994. Robert Napper, 41, was charged with Ms Nickell’s murder last year and is awaiting trial.

Mr Stagg’s lawyer Alex Tribick said the payout from the Home Office was set by an independent assessor, Lord Brennan.

Mr Stagg, of Roehampton, south-west London, was acquitted of the murder when the judge threw out the case on the grounds police had used a “honey trap” plot to encourage him to confess.

Jack lord

The case was widely seen as a low point in the recent history of the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Stagg, who lived nearby and who walked his dog on the common, spent 13 months in custody.

He always maintained his innocence and later passed a lie detector test.

Mr Tribick said the payment would help his client to “try and rebuild his life”.

He said the offer was made in a letter from the Office of Criminal Justice Reform following an application for compensation.

Mr Tribick explained Lord Brennan had submitted a “carefully considered and reasoned” 70-page document supporting the award.

The D.C. food cart scene hasn’t really picked up as much as everyone had been hoping. But if you head to Columbia Heights, you might stumble cialis upon some more interesting street food. Wander around, and you’re likely to find a fruit/vegetable vendor, and not just some guy polishing oranges and apples. Instead, a woman peeling and cutting fruits and vegetables into Ziploc bags.

If you’re like me, you need to point and gesture a little to negotiate the language barrier. But you’ll walk away with some ripe, sweet mangoes with optional chili sauce, lime juice, and salt for $2. You mouth will tingle as it’s twisted all directions by the sweet, salty, sour, and spicy flavors.

On the corner of 15th and Irving, ou can also opt for $1 snowballs that come in a multitude of flavors. Nothing really beats the heat like some sugary syrup on top cialis of shaved ice. If we can only convince them to top it with marshmallow fluff.

Small Bites Pi In math class in high school, we always celebrated pi day on March 14 by bringing in round foods for snacks. The owners of Saki and Chloe have decided to take that bit of nerd-dom and apply it to opening a brick-oven pizza place called Pi in the old Blue Fin in Adams Morgan, according to a Prince of Petworth commenter. Will it add another competitor to the gourmet pizza scene?

From cowgirls to church keys We told you the Neighborhood Restaurant Group was planning on opening a bar in the old Dakota Cowgirl space. According to Ask Tom, they’re now shooting for an October launch. The bottom level will be called Birch & Barley, and the upstairs, ChurchKey.

Restaurant Week Restaurant Week starts Monday. There. We’ve mentioned it again, and now we’re SO over it. Well… at least until it starts. For last minute reservations try calling or check out one of the numerous spots that are extending the deal.

Barack Obama- On the Issues: Defense

by Matt Gauntt

Note to readers: This is the second of a continuing series on the proposed policies of Barack Obama. These series of reviews will be written by several different Illinois Review Contributors. We will take the issues as Senator Obama has laid them out on his website and other venues one at a time. Over the next few weeks, look for more in this series of articles.

I approached this article on Obama viagra kaufen with admittedly, a preconceived notion on what I would find with the Senator on the subject of Defense. So in preparing for this article I started out looking at candidate Obama’s website for his stance on the policy issue of defense.

After reading about halfway down, I had a sense of deja-vu. The question was, “How can it be that Ronald Reagan is running for President of the United States? I was really perplexed. I found myself agreeing with the majority of the items on the web page.

Please read through what the Senator has promised in reference to Defense and see if you agree:

Can this really be Senator Obama?

Yeah, I thought so. It’s probably too good to be true.

Every year candidates from both sides swing to the outside during the primary and then swing towards the middle during the general election. Typically, there is a little bit of “nuance” when the candidate changes position, some softball questions and a wink from the media, upset partisans, but in the end, most probably understand. (Us conservatives probably get just as ticked at Republican candidates as liberals get with their candidates).

In the case of Obama, especially when it comes to Defense, it is as if we are watching “Two-Face” from the Batman movie. While his campaign material may say one thing, his actions say something entirely different.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, if you do anything, watch this video.

This video was made by Senator Obama for a left-wing group called Caucus for Priorities in advance of the Iowa primaries. In this taped appearance, Obama said almost the exact OPPOSITE of what he now says in his campaign web site today.

Now, I know what you are thinking: viagra kaufen

Not exactly. In order to flip flop, you have to have one position, give it up entirely, and adopt a different position. The trouble is, Obama has held both positions equally.

Just before the video for Caucus for Priorities was being made, Senator Obama opined his positions in Foreign Affairs magazine, which he takes almost the same position that he has now on his web site. So which is it Senator? Is it the position you took with Foreign Affairs and on your website, or what you said to Caucus for Priorities?

VERY interesting in the Foreign Affairs piece is that he calls for the goal of removing all combat brigades from Iraq by March 31, 2008. That was just a short 9 months after he penned the article.

The other salient point about Senator Obama and Defense is his stand on the surge. Watch this video. He VERY clearly has stated over and over that the surge was a bad idea. It is interesting that he was saying that the surge would not work, and that we needed to bring all of our troops home in 9 months at the same time he was calling for an INCREASE in the military forces by close to 100,000 troops. I don’t get it. If he is going to bring everyone home, why would he want 100,000 more troops? Does he just need a few more soldiers to play basketball with?

The only rational answer to this question and many other questions that surface when you read and listen to Senator Obama is that he has and will pander to whatever audience that he has to get as many votes as he can, at the expense of our men and women in the military and the protection of our country and our allies.

Senator Obama, please just take one position and let us know what it is.
